Make a rocket and see how far it can fly!

  • Step 1 - supplies you need: Post-it® Notes, Scotch™ Kids Scissors, Scotch® Super-Hold Tape, and paper straws
STEP 1 - Collect the tools you need

To make this rocket you will need some plastic or paper straws, colourful paper such as Post-it® Notes, Scotch™ Kids Scissors and Scotch® Super-Hold Tape. Once you have everything collected the adventure is ready to begin.

  • Step 2 - cutting out a long rectangle of paper and rolling the paper around a straw
STEP 2 - Create the body

To create the body of your rocket, cut out a long rectangle of paper. You can try out different lengths to see which rocket flies better! Roll the piece of paper around a straw. Make sure it’s not too tight so that it can still slide off the straw. Tape along the seam. For your rocket to fly it needs to be airtight! Place a piece of tape on the end of one side of your rocket to seal it.

  • Step 3 - creating a nose for the rocket
STEP 3 - Create the nose

To create a nose for your rocket, cut out a circle of paper. Try to find something round in your home to trace out the circle, such as a cup! Cut your circle into four parts by cutting twice across the centre. Take one of the pieces and roll it into a cone to create your nose. We suggest rolling it around the tip of a pencil. Tape it and attach it to the end of your rocket.

  • Step 4 - creating the fins and preparing for the rocket launch
STEP 4 - Add fins and prepare to launch

To create the fins, you will need a Post-it® Note or square piece of paper approximately the same size. Fold it into a triangle, then fold again into a smaller triangle to create two fins. You can keep your fins that size or trim them to make them even smaller. Repeat one more time so you have four fins. Attach the fins to your rocket with tape. Your rocket is now ready for blast off! Place it back on your straw and blow into it to see it fly!

Build paper cars and go on a road trip

  • Step 1 - cutting out the automobile template from a piece of paper
STEP 1 - Collect your tools and start cutting

First, download and print out the templates in the link below. There are outlines for an ice cream truck, a school bus and a car. You can print them in colourful versions, or in black and white if you want to add your own colours. Grab a pair of Scotch™ Kids Scissors and start cutting out each vehicle along the outline. You will also need some tape.

  • Step 2 - folding automobile template
    STEP 2 - Carefully fold

Now fold carefully along the dotted lines. As you start to create folds you should see the vehicle begin to take shape.

  • Step 3 - taping automobile template
STEP 3 - Tape it together

Get some Scotch® Magic Tape and begin taping at the front of the car and finish at the back. Place tape on the white tabs to hold it together.

  • Step 4 - three paper cars on a table
    STEP 4 - You’re ready for a drive!

Once you’ve taped it together, you’re ready to go for a drive to explore the area, or maybe take a road trip somewhere further!

Build a boat and test its buoyancy

  • Step 1 - supplies you need: Post-it® Notes, Scotch™ Kids Scissors, Scotch® Super-Hold Tape, milk cartons, and paper straws
STEP 1 - Collect the tools you need

To make a boat, you’re going to need a milk or juice carton, plastic or paper straws, Post-it® Notes or any similar coloured paper, scissors and some Scotch® Super-Hold Tape.

  • Step 2 - cutting a rectangle out of the top of the milk carton so that the boat is hollow inside
STEP 2 - Create the vessel

Take the carton and paint it, whether a simple white, or something more multicoloured. Carefully cut a rectangle out of the top so that your boat is hollow inside. Add any additional decorations to the outside such as windows or a stripe along the bottom!

  • Step 3 - taping a folded Post-it® Note to a straw
    STEP 3 - Add a sail

To create a flag, fold a Post-it® Note into a triangle and tape it to the end of a straw. Have an adult help you cut a hole for your flag near the front of your boat. Slide your straw into the hole to attach the flag.

  • Step 4 - putting a coin into the crafted boat in a bowl of water to test buoyancy
STEP 4 - Test your buoyancy

Find a container of water and test out how much weight your boat can hold before sinking. We suggest using coins. You can make a boat like this out of all kinds of materials. Try using different containers and see what floats best!
